Hillsboro Beach History

The Town of Hillsboro Beach is on a small peninsula north of Pompano Beach. It extends 3.2 miles from the Hillsboro Inlet on the south to Deerfield Beach on the north and is bordered east and west by the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway. The name derives from the Earl of Hillsborough, who received large grants of land from the English Crown during English possession of Florida. Florida became part of the United States in 1819 when purchased from Spain.
Built in 1907, the Hillsboro Lighthouse marks the north end of the Florida Reef and houses 5.5 million candlepower light. It is the most powerful light on the east coast of the United States and soars 136 feet above the water. In 1922, Herbert L. Malcolm, who would eventually serve as Town Commissioner and later as Mayor, purchased land near the Inlet and built a school. Then in 1925 he turned the school into a hotel, which has become the present Hillsboro Club.
The Town fully incorporated in 1947 by a special act of the Florida Legislature. Ernest Wooler was elected the first Mayor and the Town had 17 voters, 9 private houses, 4 groups of rental cottages and apartments, and the Hillsboro Club. At that time, Highway A1A was still unpaved and only a narrow, hand-operated bridge connected the Town with Pompano Beach. The first Town Hall, a tiny wooden building, was not built until 1955.
The Town is governed by five elected Commissioners. Protection is provided by the Hillsboro Beach Police Department and fire service comes from the Deerfield Beach Fire Department. The Town has its own wellfield of 22 acres and a water treatment plant with sewers connected to the Broward County Sewage Treatment Plant. Today over 1,500 voters list Hillsboro Beach as their primary residence, and the winter population is over 3,000.
